Professor Hamid Ghodse, INCB President, met Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday, 24 July 2008 at United Nations Headquarters in New York to review international drug control issues, including the situation in Afghanistan and progress made by Governments since the 1998 Special Session of the General Assembly on the World Drug Problem. The upcoming centennial of the convening of the International Opium Commission in Shanghai, China, in February 1909 was also discussed.

At the meeting, the INCB President presented to the Secretary-General a book entitled "International Drug Control into the 21st Century" containing a compilation of the edited thematic chapters of the INCB Annual Reports from the period 1992 to 2006. These chapters have made a significant contribution to public and academic debate about a wide range of drug problems and responses to them.
