INCB holds side event at UNGASS

19 April 2016 - INCB held a side event at the margins of the Special Session of the General Assembly on the world drug problem, held on 19 April, in New York, on " The Drug Control Conventions: a multi-faceted framework for the promotion of the health & welfare of humankind".

The INCB President's remarks stressed that drug control and health challenges can be addressed within the framework of the three international drug control conventions. Mr. Sipp attested that "proportionality is central to the drug treaties and that sanctions must be proportionate to the severity of the offence and the degree of criminal responsibility of the offender".

As panellists, INCB Board Members Bernard Leroy, Jagjit Pavadia, Richard P. Mattick and Sri Suryawati  illustrated, in their presentations, how treaty provisions address key areas being discussed during UNGASS, such as regulatory controls, criminal justice responses, health and demand reductions and availability and rational use of controlled medicines.

The event was attended by representatives of Member States and civil society who participated in a discussion on the various facets of the treaties. The event was webcast and can be viewed here ( Press release).
