Vienna, 3 June – At the margins of the thirty-fifth session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), the International Narcotics Control Board participated in a side event on artificial intelligence and digital technologies in combatting illicit drug trafficking and organized crime.
The side event was organized by the Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Centre for Combating Illicit Trafficking of Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and their Precursors (CARICC) in collaboration with the Government of Kazakhstan, the Government of Uzbekistan, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Askhat Zhumagali, Deputy Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan, Ms. Svetlana Artykova, Deputy Prosecutor General of Uzbekistan, Mr. Makhmud Khamidov, CARICC Director, and Mr. Stefano Berterame, Acting Secretary of INCB.
Mr. Berterame highlighted the work of INCB in promoting implementation of the three international drug control conventions, including towards ensuring availability of controlled substances for medical, scientific and industrial purposes and preventing diversion to illicit channels. The Acting Secretary spoke at depth about the support and tools offered to governments by the INCB precursor control and GRIDS programmes, aimed at preventing illicit drug manufacture and trafficking in highly potent synthetic drugs.
