INCB Learning holds training for Francophone African countries on international drug control 

Vienna, 27 August - Drug control officials from 11 African countries have joined an International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) training course this week which will help strengthen their compliance with the three international drug control conventions. Officials from Algeria, Benin, Chad, Comoros, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritania, Morocco, Rwanda and Senegal are participating in an online capacity building training course. 

Over the course of two days, Government officials will have an opportunity to further enhance their monitoring and reporting capacity in the field of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals which will contribute towards strengthening their control systems and ensuring that controlled substances are not diverted into illicit channels, abuse or trafficking. It will also support Member States in their efforts to improve the availability of these substances in emergency situations.

In her opening remarks, INCB President Sevil Atasoy highlighted the importance of effective control over imports and exports of drugs that are needed for licit purposes as an essential element for achieving full compliance with the provisions of the international drug control treaties.

Launched in 2016, INCB Learning is an initiative of the Board to assist Member States in implementing the provisions of the three drug control conventions, as well as the recommendations of the UNGASS 2016 outcome document. Past activities include virtual and in-person regional training seminars for authorities from countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and Oceania. Training sessions in 2025 have been held in English and French. The event took place with financial contributions from the Russian Federation.
