Sri Suryawati (Indonesia) elected as member of the
International Narcotics Control Board

Yesterday, Thursday 25 April 2013, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) elected Professor Sri Suryawati (Indonesia) as a member of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB).  The election by secret ballot was held at the organizational session of the Council in New York to fill the vacancy a for the remaining period of the five year term of the late Professor Hamid Ghodse, member of the Board, who passed away on 27 December 2012.

In line with the provisions of article 9, paragraph 1 (a) of the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961, as amended by the 1972 Protocol, Professor Sri Suryawati was elected to fill the remainder of the term, i.e. until 1 March 2017, from among three candidates nominated by the World Health Organization b.

Members of INCB serve in their personal capacity, not as Government representatives.

a Article 10, paragraph 5, of the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961, as amended by the 1972 Protocol, reads as follows: Where a vacancy occurs on the Board during the term of office of a member, the Council shall fill such vacancy as soon as possible and in accordance with the applicable provisions of article 9, by electing another member for the remainder of the term.
