International Narcotics Control Board commences 134th session, renews President's mandate and elects new Bureau Members

 

VIENNA 26 May (UN Information Service) - The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) 134th session commenced on 22 May with a meeting of its Standing Committee on Estimates to review national requirements for controlled substances for medical, scientific and industrial purposes, as part of efforts towards ensuring global availability.

The Board welcomed two new Members, Lu Lin and N. Larissa Razanadimby, elected by the Economic and Social Council for five-year terms.

During the session, the Board will continue to monitor implementation of the drug control treaties and oversee the functioning of the system for international trade in controlled substances, including addressing global imbalances in availability as well as ensuring access during emergency situations. The Board will also review its activities to support Member States in achieving the objectives of the drug control conventions and progressing the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 on health and wellbeing and Goal 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions. Support to this end is being provided through the INCB Learning and Global Rapid Interdiction of Dangerous Substances (GRIDS) Programmes.

On 25 May, the Board renewed the mandate of Jagjit Pavadia as its President and elected a new Bureau for a one-year term.

INCB is the independent, quasi-judicial body charged with promoting and monitoring Government compliance with the three international drug control conventions: the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances, and the 1988 Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. Established by the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961, the thirteen members of the Board are elected in a personal capacity by the Economic and Social Council for terms of five years.
