INCB and Guyana Police Force Collaborate on Training to Combat Synthetic Drug Trafficking
Georgetown, Guyana, 7-8 November 2024 - The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB)'s GRIDS Programme partnered with the Guyana Police Force to conduct an in-person training in Georgetown. This initiative aims to strengthen the fight against the trafficking of new psychoactive substances (NPS) and synthetic opioids which pose high risks due to their potency.
Led by INCB GRIDS Programme's Regional Technical Officer for Latin America and the Caribbean the training focused on key areas such as identifying New Psychoactive Substances, analyzing trafficking patterns, and securely sharing intelligence through INCB's platforms. Officers from Guyanese law enforcement participated actively, sharing local insights on trafficking tactics encountered in their work.

The programme also introduced officers to INCB's specialized tools-IONICS, GRIDS Intelligence HD, and ELITE-designed for international intelligence sharing and collaboration. Through practical exercises and group discussions, participants practiced identifying and safely interdicting synthetic opioids, fentanyls, and related chemicals. Exercises with INCB-provided personal protective equipment (PPE) further reinforced officers' knowledge, skills, and adherence to essential interdiction practices.

This training reinforces INCB's dedication to strengthening partnerships with Caribbean agencies to combat synthetic drug trafficking. This collaboration builds on the Memorandum of Understanding signed with CARICOM IMPACS. INCB is committed to advancing regional anti-narcotics efforts with similar training and resource-sharing initiatives, addressing the evolving challenges posed by synthetic drugs and opioids.
The Board's Global Rapid Interdiction of Dangerous Substances (GRIDS) Programme and Project ION and OPIOIDS Project support Governments' capacity to respond to changing trafficking, illicit manufacture, marketing and sales of NPS, non-medical synthetic opioids and fentanyl-related substances by providing real-time communication, facilitating information exchange and intelligence development that interdict distribution of dangerous substances.
This event was made possible through generous support from the Guyana Police Force.
